One by one

In 3 Nephi chapter 11 of the Book of Mormon Christ appears to the people on the American continent. Christ appears as a resurrected being proclaiming His divinity and His atonement. Christ organizes his church on this side of the world by calling 12 apostles to lead and guide His church. Out of all of the things that Christ taught and did for these people in the brief time He visited them (3 Nephi 11-26), the thing that stands out the most in my mind is the effort He put in to making the experience personal and unique for everyone. He takes the time not only to teach the people and testify, but to bless their lives individually.

Christ invites all to come unto Him. This is not a new invitation as His prophets have always taught that when we come unto Christ and follow his commandments we can be saved. The difference in this invitation is that it is a personal one. “Arise and come forth unto me, that ye may thrust your hands into my side, and also that ye may feel the prints of the nails in my hands and in my feet, that ye may know that I am the God of Israel and the God of the whole earth, and have been slain for the sins of the world” (3 Nephi 11:14).

The next verse describes the process of each of the individuals in attendance near the temple that day going forth “one by one until they had all gone forth” (3 Nephi 11:15). As He continues to teach them He invites the audience to bring forth any individuals who may be sick, hurt, maimed, blind, dumb, or otherwise afflicted and He blesses and heals each one of them. He then invites all of the little children to come unto Him and he blesses them one by one. We find out that in total in that single day he blessed 2500 souls individually. Imagine the time it must have taken to bless each person individually in the crowd that day, especially as He invited them to go and bring all those sick and afflicted and the children as well.

Although we were not there in Galilee or in the Americas when Christ appeared to the people here in these few chapters, we have the same invitation. Come unto Christ to be healed, blessed, strengthened, and made whole. I know that Christ lives and loves each one of us individually. He is aware of all of our individual trials and struggles and is waiting to bless and heal us as we come unto Him. I love the gospel of Jesus Christ and I am grateful for the blessing it is in my life.
