Cole's Thoughts

We are very familiar with the 10 Commandments, the golden rule, and the ‘do a good turn daily’ mantra of boy scouts throughout the world. One commandment we probably aren't as familiar with is found in the Book of Mormon in the book of Alma. In Alma 43:47 we read, “The Lord has said that: Ye shall defend your families even unto bloodshed. Therefore for this cause were the Nephites contending with the Lamanites, to defend themselves, and their families, and their lands, their country, and their rights, and their religion.”  In this verse the prophet Mormon (the name-sake of the common nickname for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) is giving us the story of a war. In the war the prophet Moroni’s army is contending with their enemies. Mormon relates to the reader the commandment the Lord gives to ‘defend your families.’ I was thinking about this verse and I realized that it is applicable to us today.

No, we aren't fighting a life or death war with swords, clubs, arrows, and shields like these groups of people in the Book of Mormon were; but we are fighting a war. We are in a constant battle against Satan, the devil, who wants nothing more than to drag us down and subject us to his selfish desires. Although we don’t have literal weapons and armor in our war, we do have weapons to combat the devil and shields to protect us from his attacks. We can see just by turning on the news that the war against the family unit is alive and well. Courts across the nation are ruling in favor of gay marriages and the sanctity of marriage and the traditional family unit are constantly degraded in the media and popular entertainment. One of our best weapons we have in this fight against the devil and his dangerous designs is our belief in Christ.

Through our faith in Christ we can continue to raise a righteous family and hold true to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I know that I am on the Lord’s side in this war and that the devil will ultimately lose. I also know that before the end comes the devil will find much success in leading away many righteous souls, not because they don’t believe, but because they do not act on their belief. I hope that I can continue to look for opportunities to stand for what I believe and be an example to others around me. I love the Savior Jesus Christ and I know that in and through His name we can all find comfort and peace. Sorry if it seems I am rambling, I just wanted to share my thoughts.

Love y’all.

Cole
