Música :)

Friday, February 25, 2011

Within the past few days I have really been in love with listening to Spanish music. It kind of reminds me of home and of my family, and I feel like it is a part of who I am that I don't appreciate enough. I listen to country all the time, which I absolutely LOVE, but I feel like the other half of me has been deprived so I've been jamming out to some Juanes and Maná and I'm in love! If you haven't heard of either one of them and you like Spanish music I suggest you look them up - it would definitely be worth your time!

These guys look kinda hardcore - but their music says otherwise. :)

Miracle Boots

Friday, February 18, 2011

See these boots? They're miracle boots. Cole actually found out they're from REI cuz our friend Ariana has them in brown, so when we went there to do our wedding registry I tried them on and he fell in love with them and so did I. Sadly enough they didn't have my size in the store or online. Crazy, I know. Well I checked back occasionally and they had every size except for 7. But guess what? Today I decided to check again and all they had was a size 7 and they were on sale! They were originally $150 but they were marked down to $75! They're a dang good pair of black leather boots, so I immediately called Cole and told him that I was gonna buy them and he approved and was just as excited as I was. We went shopping for some black leather boots for me last night, but didn't have any success. Now I know why...

Kinda funny, but I feel like I learned a life lesson from a pair of boots. Good things come to those who wait and who stay on their toes ready for whatever life has to throw at them. Thanks to my persistence and determination to get these boots (and Cole's encouragement) I am now expecting to have these babies by next Monday! So exciting. I also feel like Cole is a miracle in my life too. He treats me SO good - sometimes too good I think. I am not exactly sure what I did to deserve a man as wonderful as him, but I'm sure glad I did whatever it was. There are many modern day miracles, we just have to have the eyes to see and the faith that they will happen. To some these moments may be insignificant, but to me they're miraculous.

A Week of Mindful Eating

Friday, February 11, 2011

I'm in a women's health issues class here at BYU and I must say that I absolutely LOVE it! It is so interesting to learn about the health threats to women and how women are viewed in the world today. For this class we have to do 5 activities outside of class that make us more aware of women's health, so I am doing a challenge through the Women's Resource Center here on campus called "A Week of Mindful Eating." Each day focuses on different aspects of what it means and how to become a mindful eater. I am excited to see what I learn from this experience!

I just want to say that I know that I am a daughter of a loving Father in heaven and each and every daughter of his (every woman ever upon the face of this earth) has a special place in His heart. I love knowing that I have a personal relationship with Him and that He is always there for me to talk to and help me through my hard times.

One of my favorite scriptures about women is in the New Testament.

Proverbs 31:10
"Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies."

Heavenly Father desires that His daughters are virtuous and loving. He made us with the desire to be that way and provides us with the way to live a virtuous and lovely life. What a blessing!

February 7, 2011 - Day 1: What type of eater am I?

After taking the quiz and reading about different types of eaters there are I would have to say I'm a mix of a few of them. I am:

-Intuitive/Mindful: I honor hunger, respect fullness, and enjoy the pleasure of eating.

-The Waste-not Unconscious: Whenever I go out to eat I don't like to waste my food so I usually eat WAY past being full.
-The Chaotic Unconscious: My life gets pretty chaotic and there are times where I don't sit down to have a meal. I grab something unhealthy on the go or sometimes nothing at all. No bueno.

-The Unconscious: I may not be hungry but those cookies or cupcakes or whatever yummy thing that's up for grabs just HAS to be eaten!

-The Emotional Unconscious: I love to indulge in ice cream (preferably Blue Bell), chocolate chip cookies, cupcakes of any sort and other sweets whenever I have had a hard day.I tend to eat my feelings A LOT.

I have many strengths and many weaknesses when it comes to my eating habits. I would like to keep on eating when I am hungry and recognizing when I am full like I do now, but I would like to be able to not give into the tempting sweets when I am already overly stuffed or just because they are up for grabs.

February 8, 2011 - Day 2: Spiritual Rewards for Eating Healthy

In Section 89 of the Doctrine & Covenants verses 18-21 we are promised that we will "find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;" and we "shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint." And the Lord also gives us a promise that "the destroying angel shall pass by...and not slay them." We are also told that we "shall receive health in their navel and marrow to our bones. Why would someone not want these things?! I know I do!

Every human being has a spirit within them. We are all spirit sons and daughters of God. When we take care of the physical body that God has blessed us with by choosing to come to earth, we also nourish our spirits. This affects our ability to feel of the Spirit of the Lord more fully making us healthier, happier, lovelier people. Again, why would someone not want these things?! I sure do!

February 9, 2011 - Day 3: Eat what I want!  No restrictions.

Okay...so this was not something I thought would be a part of this week, but I'm not gonna complain! There is definitely good wisdom in it when you really think about it though.

"Many of us fall victim to labeling foods as healthy or unhealthy. Perhaps we see how many calories or grams of fat are in particular food and think, "I will never eat that again!" It is a true misfortune to restrict foods, because the truth is, there are no bad foods. All foods can be included in any diet in moderation. The secret to healthy eating is making wise judgments of how often and how much."

I couldn't agree with this quote more! I never though of it in this way, and I have to admit there are many foods that I label as "unhealthy" but I still love to eat them, which leaves me feeling yucky and guilty after I indulge in them. I just need to learn that it is okay to eat them I just need to make sure I'm not eating too much of whatever it is and that I'm not eating it all the time. Sounds like a good plan to me!

I usually tend to overeat warm chocolate chip cookies and pizza. They're 2 of my most favorite things. Chocolate chip cookies seem to taste the best when they're fresh outta the oven with a nice cold glass of milk (I blame that on my dad) and pizza seems to taste the best freshly purchased from wherever I decide to buy it from (Domino's or The Store in Midway are my favorites). I try to restrict myself from eating these because I know they're not the best for me, so when I do get the chance to eat them I eat too much of them, which is no bueno. Allowing myself to eat these foods in moderation will help me enjoy my food without feeling guilty as long as I don't overdo it.

February 10, 2011 - Day 4: Eat 3 real meals.

"Eating food becomes a real meal when you focus on the eating experience rather than merely refueling your body with quick, on-the-go calories, a real meal is eaten without distractions while sitting down, planned in advance, and generally involves more than one food group."

This is definitely something that is a big challenge for me. I usually wake up late and grab something quick for breakfast, pack a sandwich for lunch, and go out to eat or make somethin quick and easy for supper once I get home. When you live the life of a busy girl who is trying to balance school, work, wedding plans and just the demands of life in general it's hard to sit down and eat a real meal!

I have noticed that when I do get to eat 3 real meals I am satisfied for longer amounts of time and I don't get the "munchies" as often, which is definitely a lot healthier. I used to be really bad at snacking all the time, even when I wasn't hungry. I've become better and I don't buy unhealthy snacking foods so that when I do want a snack all I have to choose from is a piece of fruit or vegetables.

February 11, 2011 - Day 5: Nurture your needs without using food.

We all go through the ups and downs of life and turn to food for consolation - or at least I know I do! This is something that is not good. I need to find other ways to destress or celebrate. I know that going for a run is always a good way to destress and something I need to get in the habit of doing anyways, so maybe that's what I'll do!

I am so glad that I had the chance to take this week to analyze my eating strengths and weaknesses, and how to improve in the areas I need to and also how to pat myself on the back for the good things I am doing.

Yay for friends and productivity!

Monday, February 7, 2011

This past weekend was SO great! Cole and I found my wedding dress AND we decided on what announcements we're gonna use - hooray for us! There are still some other things on our "to do list" for the wedding, but we definitely had a very productive weekend! Not to mention a very fun one too! We recorded the BYU basketball game and went back up to Midway to watch it and our friends Eric and Ariana drove up and we got some yummy BBQ chicken pizza, drinks and headed to Cole's grandparents (who I adore!) to watch the game and eat our food. We then went to the ice castles that are in Midway - so neat! Cole met Ariana in his Farsi class and became good friends with her and they coordinated for us to do a double date with her and her husband and now we're planning on doing all kinds of fun things with them! Lots of camping this summer and a road trip to Cali - can't wait! :) We love doing things with them and we hope that we'll be lifetime friends with them.

The four of us at the ice castles.

Cole and I at the ice castles - so neat!

We took a few pictures after church - he's such a good lookin' man!
